The Washington Hospital and the Foundation Recognize Martha Y. Berman for her Dedication

The Washington Hospital and The Washington Hospital Foundation honored Martha Yorkin Berman with the 2007 Distinguished Service Award on Thursday, May 3rd at the Annual Donor Reception.

This award recognizes the commitment and dedication of Martha to The Washington Hospital as well as to the Washington County community.  The Award was presented to her at the Foundation's annual Evening of Recognition, held at Valley Brook Country Club.

Martha's love of this community and her desire to improve the quality of life here has led her to become one of Washington's best-known and beloved volunteers.  She has given her time and support to The Washington Hospital, as the first female chairman of the Hospital's Board of Trustees; Washington Economic Development Committee, LeMoyne Center, Brownson House, Literacy Council, Citizen's Library, and Washington County Community Foundation.

After moving in to a retirement community in Allegheny County, Martha's continued dedication to Washington County is nothing short of exemplary.  "My heart is still in Washington," she says.

Mary Leif, Former Hospital Employee, Establishes
Charitable Gift Annuity

At 84 years young, Mary Denny Leif maintains the vigor, enthusiasm, and commitment that characterized her 43-year career at The Washington Hospital.  Mary continues to serve others in her retirement, and she is still helping the Hospital - by establishing a charitable gift annuity.

Mary, who liked working in the delivery room while a student at The Washington Hospital School of Nursing, began full time employment there after graduating in the Class of 1946.  She worked on various units of the Hospital, earned her BSN degree and was also an instructor in the School of Nursing.  After earning her Master’s degree in Library Science in 1974, Mary was the hospital and School of Nursing librarian until her retirement in 1989.

Now living at Sherwood Oaks in Cranberry Township, Mary is the librarian for the residents of this retirement community.  She works several hours each day, while leaving time to enjoy flower gardening, trips and other activities sponsored by Sherwood Oaks.

A big part of Mary’s life is her beautiful dog, ChocO, a Husky-Sheltie mix.  She and ChocO participate in the pet therapy program for the nursing units at Sherwood Oaks.  “ChocO is very gentle with all the patients, and she gives them much joy,” says Mary with a smile.  “She is a wonderful companion for me.”

During a recent visit with her son Fred of suburban Washington D.C., Mary and he discussed some financial matters.  They both agreed that “something better” could be done with assets that Mary had in the bank.  Mary’s first thought was to establish a charitable gift annuity with the Hospital.  “The Washington Hospital was a big part of my life and of my family’s life,” comments Mary.  Mary’s other son, Glen, and his wife Paula Mlatnik Leif, of Henderson, NC, are also School of Nursing alumni.  “A gift annuity will ultimately benefit the Hospital, and is helping me now by paying me a higher rate of return on my money.”

“I am very pleased with my decision to start a gift annuity,” notes Mary.  “The process was very easy, and there were no problems at all.  I’m glad to be able to continue to help the Hospital.”

Donor Recognition

The Washington Hospital donors are recognized in the following ways:

Annual Gifts of $100 or more are recognized in the Hospital and Foundations annual report.

Commemorative Gifts of all sizes to the Hospital or Hospice Care are made in honor of someone on a special occasion or as a memorial to someone who has passed away. Hospice Care memorial donors are recognized in the semi-annual Hospice Newsletter, The Journey; all others are recognized in the Hospital and Foundation’s annual report. Acknowledgments are sent to the family or loved one as appropriate.

The Tree of Life is a beautiful bronze tree located in the Hospital’s main lobby. It is a special way to commemorate a loved one and support the Hospital. Each leaf or stone bears the name(s) of the honoree as specified by the donor.

The Legacy Library, a commemorative giving recognition piece, for donations to Hospice Care is a trompe l'oeil (faux painted) bookcase located on the first floor of Donnell House.  The shelves of this library are filled with painted books that will have a brass plate engraved with an honoree or donor's name affixed to the spine.

Donor Plaques are located throughout the Hospital as naming opportunities for the donors of major gifts (e.g., an operating suite, patient unit, waiting area, patient room, etc.).

The Heritage Society Plaque, located in the main lobby, is organized into giving level categories to recognize cumulative giving of $2,500 and above. Permanent brass name plates engraved with donors’ names are moved to higher giving categories as cumulative giving increases. In addition, there are revocable and irrevocable deferred gifts sections.

Annual Donor Reception - Donors of $500 or more are invited to attend a private reception each May. Each year an individual or special group may be honored at the donor reception for their philanthropy and commitment to The Washington Hospital.

The Washington Hospital
Annual Donor Reception

This very special annual occasion, to be held May 8, 2008 at Valley Brook Country Club, gives both The Washington Hospital Board of Trustees and The Washington Hospital Foundation Board of Directors the opportunity to publicly express their appreciation for the generosity of so many.  It is also a time to pay tribute to an individual or group who has made an outstanding difference in the life of the Hospital.  In the past, honorees have included John Campbell, the Hospital Auxiliary, Thomas R. Milhollan, Nan and "Pete" Cameron, Shana and Richard Donnell, the Hospital Medical Staff, Dr. and Mrs. E. Ronald Salvitti, Washington Federal, and Martha Berman.
