The Washington Hospital and the Foundation Recognize Martha Y. Berman for her Dedication
This award recognizes the commitment and dedication of Martha to The Washington Hospital as well as to the Washington County community. The Award was presented to her at the Foundation's annual Evening of Recognition, held at Valley Brook Country Club. Martha's love of this community and her desire to improve the quality of life here has led her to become one of Washington's best-known and beloved volunteers. She has given her time and support to The Washington Hospital, as the first female chairman of the Hospital's Board of Trustees; Washington Economic Development Committee, LeMoyne Center, Brownson House, Literacy Council, Citizen's Library, and Washington County Community Foundation. After moving in to a retirement
community in Allegheny County, Martha's continued dedication to
Washington County is nothing short of exemplary. "My heart is
still in Washington," she says.

Mary Leif,
Former Hospital
Employee, Establishes Mary, who liked working in the delivery room while a student at The Washington Hospital School of Nursing, began full time employment there after graduating in the Class of 1946. She worked on various units of the Hospital, earned her BSN degree and was also an instructor in the School of Nursing. After earning her Master’s degree in Library Science in 1974, Mary was the hospital and School of Nursing librarian until her retirement in 1989. Now living at Sherwood Oaks in Cranberry Township, Mary is the librarian for the residents of this retirement community. She works several hours each day, while leaving time to enjoy flower gardening, trips and other activities sponsored by Sherwood Oaks. A big part of Mary’s life is her beautiful dog, ChocO, a Husky-Sheltie mix. She and ChocO participate in the pet therapy program for the nursing units at Sherwood Oaks. “ChocO is very gentle with all the patients, and she gives them much joy,” says Mary with a smile. “She is a wonderful companion for me.” During a recent visit with her son Fred of suburban Washington D.C., Mary and he discussed some financial matters. They both agreed that “something better” could be done with assets that Mary had in the bank. Mary’s first thought was to establish a charitable gift annuity with the Hospital. “The Washington Hospital was a big part of my life and of my family’s life,” comments Mary. Mary’s other son, Glen, and his wife Paula Mlatnik Leif, of Henderson, NC, are also School of Nursing alumni. “A gift annuity will ultimately benefit the Hospital, and is helping me now by paying me a higher rate of return on my money.” “I am very pleased with my decision to start a gift annuity,” notes Mary. “The process was very easy, and there were no problems at all. I’m glad to be able to continue to help the Hospital.”
