The Washington Hospital and the Foundation
Honor Barron "Pat" McCune, Jr.
at the Annual Donor Reception

The Washington Hospital and The Washington Hospital Foundation honored Mr. Barron “Pat” McCune, Jr. with the 2009 Distinguished Service Award on Thursday, May 7th. This award recognizes the commitment and generosity of Mr. McCune, both financially and with his service, to The Washington Hospital and the Washington County community.  The Award was presented to him at the Foundation’s annual Evening of Recognition, which was held at Valley Brook Country Club.

Mr. McCune’s support of The Washington Hospital has been long-standing.  Appointed to the Hospital’s Board of Trustees in 1993, he continued to serve until he retired from the Board on December 31, 2008.  In 2001, Mr. McCune became Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees and served in that position until 2005.  He became Board Chairman in 2006 and served until his retirement from the Board.  As Chairman and an ex officio member of all Board Committees, Mr. McCune contributed not only to the health and well-being of the Hospital’s patients, but also to the health and well-being of our community.

Through his dedication and leadership the hospital was able to successfully complete the largest expansion project in our history.   This expansion positioned us to meet the ever increasing healthcare needs of our aging and growing population.

Mr. McCune is President and CEO of Community Bank and Vice Chairman of the Board of CB Financial Services, Inc.  He was a partner in the law firm of McCune & Vreeland until 1999 when he became President of the bank.

In addition to serving on The Washington Hospital Board of Directors, he also serves or has served on the Boards of the Washington Industrial Development Corporation, the Washington County Council on Economic Development, and the Pennsylvania Economy League.  He was also President of the Meadowcroft Foundation.

Mary Leif, Former Hospital Employee, Established
Charitable Gift Annuity

At age 84 Mary Denny Leif established a charitable gift annuity with The Washington Hospital.  Mary was a vigorous, enthusiastic, and committed woman who dedicated 43 years to The Washington Hospital.  She liked working in the delivery room while a student at the hospital’s school of nursing and began full-time employment there after graduating in the Class of 1946.  She worked on various units in the hospital, earned her BSN degree and was also an instructor in the school of nursing.  After earning her Master’s degree in Library Science in 1974, Mary was the hospital and school of nursing librarian until her retirement in 1989.

In her retirement Mary was also the librarian for the residents of the Sherwood Oaks community in Cranberry Township.  She worked several hours each day, while leaving time to enjoy flower gardening, trips and other activities sponsored by Sherwood Oaks.

A big part of Mary’s life was her beautiful dog, ChocO, a Husky-Sheltie mix.  She and ChocO participated in the pet therapy program for the nursing units at Sherwood Oaks.  “ChocO is very gentle with all the patients, and she gives them much joy,” says Mary with a smile.  “She is a wonderful companion for me.”

Some time ago Mary discussed her financial matters with her son Fred of Washington D.C. at which time they both agreed that “something better” could be done with assets that Mary had in the bank.  Mary’s first thought was to establish a charitable gift annuity with the Hospital.  “The Washington Hospital was a big part of my life and of my family’s life,” comments Mary.  Mary’s other son, Glen, and his wife, Paula, of Henderson, NC, are also school of nursing alumni.  “A gift annuity will ultimately benefit the Hospital, and is helping me now by paying me a higher rate of return on my money.”

Mary passed away March 2009.

“I am very pleased with my decision to start a gift annuity,” noted Mary at the time.  “The process was very easy, and there were no problems at all.  I’m glad to be able to continue to help the Hospital.”

Although Mary is no longer with us, her gift will be used to continue on her legacy as she had intended.

Donor Recognition

Click here to view the Hospital's Annual Donor Report

The Washington Hospital donors are recognized in the following ways:

Annual Gifts of $100 or more are recognized in the Hospital and Foundations annual report.

Commemorative Gifts of all sizes to the Hospital or Hospice Care are made in honor of someone on a special occasion or as a memorial to someone who has passed away. Hospice Care memorial donors are recognized in the semi-annual Hospice Newsletter, The Journey; all others are recognized in the Hospital and Foundation’s annual report. Acknowledgments are sent to the family or loved one as appropriate.

The Tree of Life is a beautiful bronze tree located in the Hospital’s main lobby. It is a special way to commemorate a loved one and support the Hospital. Each leaf or stone bears the name(s) of the honoree as specified by the donor.

The Legacy Library, a commemorative giving recognition piece, for donations to Hospice Care is a trompe l'oeil (faux painted) bookcase located on the first floor of Donnell House.  The shelves of this library are filled with painted books that will have a brass plate engraved with an honoree or donor's name affixed to the spine.

Donor Plaques are located throughout the Hospital as naming opportunities for the donors of major gifts (e.g., an operating suite, patient unit, waiting area, patient room, etc.).

The Heritage Society Plaque, located in the main lobby, is organized into giving level categories to recognize cumulative giving of $2,500 and above. Permanent brass name plates engraved with donors’ names are moved to higher giving categories as cumulative giving increases. In addition, there are revocable and irrevocable deferred gifts sections.

Annual Donor Reception - Donors of $500 or more are invited to attend a private reception each May. Each year an individual or special group may be honored at the donor reception for their philanthropy and commitment to The Washington Hospital.
