The Washington Hospital is a
voluntary, not-for-profit community hospital serving Washington and its
surrounding communities since 1897. Located in Washington with multiple
outpatient sites throughout Washington and Greene counties, the hospital has
265 beds in addition to a 16-bassinet nursery and an 8-bed residential
hospice. The hospital’s medical staff includes more than 350 primary care
and specialty physicians providing a full range of medical and surgical care.
The Mission
We are dedicated to providing high quality healthcare services to
residents of Washington County an surrounding service areas, and are
committed to improving the health status of the community while preserving
each patient’s
dignity as a unique individual. We foster a working environment which
enables our employees to fulfill the mission of the hospital and to provide
the highest quality patient care. The hospital provides services to all
persons without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin,
sexual preference, disability, or ability to pay.
As a major employer
and educational institution in Washington County, the hospital will continue
to assume a role of civic leadership. We, as a healthcare organization, also
recognize our obligation to provide leadership to the healthcare community
across southwestern Pennsylvania focusing on Washington, Greene, Fayette,
and southern Allegheny counties. This includes coordination, networking, and
collaboration with other health institutions to insure a continuum of care
for the community, education of professionals in the healthcare field,
evaluation of the medical needs in the community, and service development
consistent with meeting those needs

100 Years of
History
Founded
in 1897, The Washington Hospital is the largest full-service hospital in
Washington County, serving over 250,000 individuals within its service area.
It is currently licensed for 258 beds, 16 bassinets, and over 200 physicians
on staff. Ninety percent of the medical staff is board certified, boasting
the second highest percentage among all hospitals in Pennsylvania.
On May 25, 1897, a charter of
incorporation for The Washington Hospital was granted for the purpose of
providing medical and surgical aid and nursing "for the sick and
injured; the establishment of a Training School for Nurses; maintenance
of a dispensary to supply medicine; and the acquiring of such lands,
buildings and equipment as necessary for the accommodation of such
objects of charity."
The A. W. Acheson Homestead on
Acheson Avenue was purchased and altered to care for 20 patients and
opened to the public in May 1898. Several additions were constructed to
this building and adjacent houses were bought to provide a maternity
department and a residence for nurses.
City Hospital was erected and
opened in April 1907. The idea of consolidating Washington and City
Hospitals was advanced in 1920. On November 15, 1921, the two merged and
became The Washington Hospital.
Several years later, the City
of Washington raised $600,000 and the Wilson Development Company donated
seven acres of land on the north edge of the city to The Washington
Hospital for construction of a new facility. On March 23, 1927, the
first building of the current hospital was opened to the public.
During 1972 the Hospital
started the Family Medicine Residency Program to educate young physicians in this
growing specialty. The three-year program brings 24 physicians to The
Washington Hospital for intensive training in family medicine.
A state-of-the-art computer
system was installed to usher The Washington Hospital into the computer
age in 1980. Computer applications became an integral part of much of
the Hospital’s operation.
The history of The Washington
Hospital continues to be a story of steady growth and periodic expansion
and renovation to meet the health care needs and services required by
our patients and community.
