Taking care of the whole person has always been a priority at The Washington Hospital. This involves fulfilling spiritual needs. For that reason, the hospital expanded its ministerial services this past year and developed a Department of Pastoral Care. The department consists of a head chaplain and volunteer chaplains who help patients during their stays and provide spiritual care and counseling. Through the Department of Pastoral Care, chaplains are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The chaplains are of all faiths, Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Jewish. These volunteer chaplains work with the head chaplain to visit newly admitted patients and provide follow-up spiritual care. The interfaith ministry offers:
Patients and their families may request Holy Communion, Baptism, and anointing of the sick. The chaplains are very sensitive to requests with regard to meeting patients’ special needs.
The chapel, located in the hospital’s main lobby, has
been renovated. It features beautiful stained glass windows that reflect a
serenity and peace for the hospital’s interfaith ministry. There is an altar in
the center, a kneeler with an area for flowers, and an open Bible for individual
devotions. Patients and their families are invited to worship in the chapel and
to seek the spiritual care and counseling available through this new department. |
