Functional Communication Group
Who: Children ages 3-5 with expressive language deficits/fine motor development When: Tuesday mornings 10:00 – 11:00 Where: Children’s Therapy Center McMurray Teachers: Joy Williamson Speech Therapist Eileen Conley-Ferris COTA/L
Have fun interacting with peers while participating in fun activities!
This group is designed to improve effective communication skills which may include: verbal, basic signs/gestures, and augmentative communication. Each child is different and will be encouraged to use their most effective mode of communication. If the child is also receiving occupational therapy services, this setting will give the child an opportunity to address their current OT goals. The group will also provide naturalistic motivators through peer interactions and social experiences for consequences, turn taking, and cooperative play.
The following speech skills will be focused on: Learning new vocabulary Interacting appropriately with peers Greeting others appropriately Taking turns Making choices Answering basic questions yes/no Improving eye contact
The following occupational therapy skills will be focused on: Manipulating various writing tools Developing self help skills Developing fine and gross motor skills
The children will participate in theme based units and will be able to follow a preschool schedule which will include opportunities for free play, circle time, table activities, gross motor time, snack time, and a goodbye routine.
