The Women's CenterLocated in the Neighbor Health Center, at 95 Leonard Avenue, Washington, the Women's Health Center offers mammography, ultrasound, and osteoporosis diagnostic services. Full-time staffing by a breast imaging physician insures appropriate care for both screening and diagnostic mammography. Breast ultrasound and a full range of breast interventional services, including ultrasound-guided aspiration/ biopsy, stereotactic biopsy, galactography, and needle localizations are performed at the Women's Health Center. One of the goals at the center is to increase the utilization of screening mammography - a goal in keeping with disease prevention and healthcare maintenance. A screening mammogram consists of the standard four-view study, which is checked for film and image quality by the technologist before the patient leaves the center. These films are then read by the radiologist, similar to general diagnostic radiology; a report is sent to the referring physician; and the results are sent to the patient. For diagnostic mammography, patients undergo a complete work-up ending in a conference with the radiologist. Referring physicians are contacted regarding recommendations for biopsy or excision. Another diagnostic service at the Women's Health Center is osteoporosis
screening. Osteoporosis is a disease in which the bones become brittle and may
break. It is treatable if it is detected in the earliest stages. Patients can be
put on medications to prevent further bone loss. The screening procedure, called
bone densitometry, or DEXA, is painless and non-invasive. While the patient is
lying on a padded table, the technologist moves the arm of the equipment to the
mid-section of the body. A computer, which is connected to the equipment,
displays a color image of the patient's bone mineral density. The results are
then analyzed by a radiologist, and a report is sent to the referring physician. Obstetrics And Women's Health Care DepartmentA full range of obstetrical and gynecological services is available to women at the main location of the hospital, 155 Wilson Avenue, in Washington. The Obstetrics and Women's Health Care Department on the 5th floor of the hospital has 17 private rooms for obstetrical and gynecological patients as well five labor/ delivery/recovery suites, three labor/observation rooms, a surgical delivery room, and a nursery, including bassinets for infants with special monitoring needs. More than 1100 babies are delivered annually at The Washington Hospital. The Washington Hospital has one of the lowest caesarean birth rates in southwestern Pennsylvania. The Obstetrics and Women's Health Care Department also contains rooms where
the professional staff conducts prenatal classes (labor and delivery,
breast-feeding, and child care, as well as other special focus classes),

atmosphere with complete confidentiality. Each mother-to-be is assigned a care
coordinator, a nurse specializing in the care of pregnant women. The care
coordinator provides support for the mother-to-be throughout her pregnancy and
after the birth of her baby. The phone number of the center is 724-223-3256.
