Recognition: Nicholas Lowery, D. P. M.

Recently, Dr. Nicholas Lowery, a podiatrist in the Washington Health System Foot and Ankle Specialists practice, received a prestigious appointment. He was asked by the American Diabetes Association to be the next chairman of its Foot Committee, which is a special interest group focused on care of the diabetic foot.

The purpose of the American Diabetes Association Interest Group on Foot Care is to develop national standards for foot care, to develop educational programs in foot care management and prevention for health care professionals and individuals with diabetes, to promote clinical and scientific research into diabetic foot disease, to increase public awareness of the foot problems associated with diabetes, to promote the collection of accurate data on amputations and diabetes, and to promote national and international collaboration among agencies concerned with diabetes research and the educational programs geared toward prevention.

Dr. Lowery's responsibilities will include planning the national scientific meetings, selecting achievement award winners, and writing consensus statements with other leaders in diabetic foot surgery from other centers nationwide. He will be serving a two-year term.

Congratulations to Dr. Lowery, who, in addition to practicing within the Washington Health System Foot and Ankle Specialists group, sees patients at our outstanding Wound Care Center.
